So I have been in Dublin (Ohio) all weekend, volunteering at the Dublin Irish festival. The nice thing about being in a tent is that you do not have to worry as much about crowds. Now granted there are tonnes of vendors. And lots of alcohol. But I think a large number of people come for the music. Dozens of groups, from amateurs playing for 3 or 4 people to concert stages for 100s of audience members.
As it happens we were pretty well next to the celtic rock tent, which has a higher volume and better known groups than many of the other stages. Although I missed getting to hear some of the trad group that were playing midsize venues.
Where to bring this back to writing? As it happens one of the tricks I use to write long pieces is to choose one piece of music and play it every time I sat down to write, and then only played it then. Of course it had to be a piece that I would not mind never hearing again.
Another facet in live music is watching the audience as well as listening to the music. You can follow people from tent to tent and watch them become totally different people.
So tell me, how do you feel about music?
